About Decentralized Basic Education 2 (DBE2) Project

The very large scale teacher quality reform efforts in Indonesia have opened up four new types of opportunities for peer level collaboration for teacher education colleges across the country. Peer level collaboration is an essential step in the development of networks that can sustain professional quality.

The first type of opportunity is regional. The DBE2 program is helping teachers’ colleges at the provincial level collaboratively design networks of partnerships for both pre-service and in-service training. Both secular and Islamic institutions within provinces are leveraging scarce resources to accomplish national goals.

In addition, regional teachers’ colleges are creating in-service networks with regional schools. These decentralized, in-service–based professional development networks are relatively new in Indonesia.

Opportunities for collaboration are also opening up for teachers’ colleges across regions through shared thematic program materials development.

Finally, opportunities for shared and sustained collaboration with international partner universities are being developed through creative uses of Internet technology.
